With the emergence of young West Coast artists on the rise, it was only a matter of time before Bompton’s own, YG, managed to make his return on the Hip Hop charts. Having teamed up with hit-producer DJ Mustard, the duo has created a dynamic and infectious sound that’s garnered the attention of the entire country. Now being the perfect time, the Def Jam signee is finally gearing for the release of his long-awaited debut album ‘My Krazy Life’ on March 18th. YG recently stopped by the 106KMEL VIP Lounge for an intimate One Mic interview with Shay Diddy in front of a live audience, as they delved into his crazy life in Compton before “My Hitta” and what fans can expect on his album.
The 23-year-old rapper has put out several mixtapes and made himself a well-known name in California, specifically L.A, since his “Toot It and Boot It” days. Reflecting back on his come-up, YG described his gang lifestyle, which included getting jumped at events, robbery, and even jail time before getting signed. Since then, YG has grown as a rapper and has found more confidence in his sound after joining forces with DJ Mustard. His Compton-influence can be heard throughout his lyrics, while the beat production encourages fans to get turnt up. YG and Mustard’s ability to seamlessly blend the two elements is what created the platinum single “My Hitta.” In addition to bringing home more platinum plaques, YG is also hoping that the Jeezy and Rich Homie Quan-assisted record will bring home a Grammy. He explained to Shay, “That song should get a Grammy because the title and the concept of the record are my n----. People are against that word, but we made that record and it’s a hit. It went platinum, and it got 60 million views on YouTube. That’s different. I feel like people should recognize when artists are doing things that aren’t regular. That should win a Grammy.”
‘My Krazy Life’ is due in mid-March and boasts of features from the likes of Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and more. YG also managed to tap Lil Wayne, Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj for the remix of his current hit anthem, though revealing to Shay that he initially first wanted Rihanna on the track. Find out how Nicki Minaj eventually joined the remix, as well as his thoughts on the NFL fining players on the usage of the n-word and what kind of music he likes to have to sex to, in the exclusive interview below!
